Improvisation is boring
Conversation we had with Rio in a tram in Krakow a day before his performance in Klub Re, a week later reconstructed by him as an interview.
What made you start doing sound art?
Simply because I was moved. When I had been hitten by some really great works, like Jean-Claude Eloy's â€Ĺ›Gaku no Michi” or work by Dajuin Yao, there was no longer any thought in my mind. Just like I was standing on the other side of time, seeing the planet from universe. This experience of sudden enlightment oriented me as a sound artist.
How did your works evolved?
After my unsuccessful trials in the LIVE improvisation, using whatever software/hardware, I realized that only through relistening, I can condense these emotions and experiences into time and share them with my audience.
To me, the improvisation in computer music is becoming a kind of performing art; people using different kind of interfaces and motions to capture the audience's eye, and the audience ponder which movement causes that sound. Sometimes it's good and provocative while seeing, but in the aspect of listening, most of the time it's boring.
So, what is sound art to you?
It's a part of my life, and also part of the audiences' lives. Therefore, it's such a precious chance to share with others with what I experienced: the beauty, the energy, the indescribable feeling that drive tears from my eyes....
